General Information

Foundation History

In 1993 the Municipal Library first opened as a study room for our residents and in 1994 it became a loaning library.

The first books, which later became the first book collection, were given to the library through donations from the Ministry of Education and Culture, the church of Panagia Chriseleousa , as well as from private donors, friends of the library.

The enrichment of the library continues with the Strovolos Municipality 's purchase of new editions representing the broad range of human knowledge.

The library, when founded, was temporarily lodged in private buildings of the Strovolos CO-OP. The design of a new building for the municipal library has already started, and will become a model for the whole area.

During the 12 years of its operation, the library has offered many services to readers and has contributed to cultural activities through book presentations, book fairs, speeches, educational programs and publications.

The library numbers 17, 000 books and a small number of multimedia materials.

Anyone can apply for membership, regardless age, sex, economic or social status.

The cataloguing of the library material by computer has already begun with the use of the library software ABEKT S. S., generously provided by the National Centre of Corroboration. The classification follows the decimal classification system M Dewey (DDC) and the listing follows the national system AACR2.
The library is connected to the internet and has its own e-mail address.

The information is retrieved from the database through the internet with access to databases of the library of the University of Cyprus .

Library activities

Literature mornings

The Strovolos Municipal Library, targeting an approach to elementary school students of the Municipality and an improved relationship between children and books, established “Literature Mornings” in November 1993.

Elementary school students, escorted by their teachers, visit the library every Wednesday for two one-hour sessions, aiming to familiarise themselves with the writers of children's literature in Greek.

This innovative program successfully continues today, as thousands of Strovolos Elementary school children have participated.

These children have personally encountered the work of over 60 writers of children's literature.

Events

At the end of each school year the library organises an event with the children who attended “Literature Mornings” as well as all the writers who have visited the library and talked with the children.

Lectures and speeches are also organised, addressing contemporary cultural subjects, opening the door to numerous scholars and residents. The library also hosts contests and annual events in collaboration with the Friends of the Municipal Library Club (international book day, international music day, Christmas, Easter) as well as all-day events.
